An Australian Study of 44 potential home buyers looked at how scents can affect perceptions of a home’s value. The 44 people were split into two groups to inspect a house that had been infused with the smell of either freshly-baked brownies, hot bread, roast chicken, freshly brewed coffee, citrus or smelly socks. 

The groups were asked to estimate the value of the house from anywhere between $700,000 to $850,000. The smell of citrus in the home got the highest average valuation at $850,000 followed by the scent of brownies with an average value of $820,000 Unsurprisingly smelly socks averaged the lowest valuation at just $743,750.
